K-5 Music Class Notes: Fall Edition
Mrs. Trushell plays a vital role in music education for our students. From kindergarten onward, she fosters a love of music at Midvale and Port Washington elementary schools, which together serve around 905 students. Recently, she took some time away from her busy schedule to provide us with an overview of what each grade level is working on:
Kindergarten
- Steady beat, rhythm composing, and proper playing on the instruments
1st Grade
- Rhythm, composing, instruments, and high/low sounds
2nd Grade
- Ostinatos, tempo, sol/la/mi sight reading
Ostinato (noun): A musical pattern or phrase that is consistently repeated throughout a piece of music, which can be melodic, rhythmic, or harmonic, providing a stable foundation for other musical elements to develop.
3rd Grade
- Recorders and treble clef notation
4th Grade
- Link-up, recorders, ukuleles
Carnegie Hall’s Link Up program introduces students in grades 3–5 to the orchestra by helping them to become a part of it. Students all over the country and around the world come together with their local orchestras to learn about, listen to, and perform great music. (source)
5th Grade
- Link-up, recorders, ukuleles, keyboards, singing in 2 and 3 parts
What’s New?
Thanks to a grant from the Indian Valley Foundation, each elementary building has four new keyboards! Classroom additions like this help students learn and grow in music for years to come!
